Registry Books
Appaloosa |
An Appaloosa horse shall be defined as any horse that is registered or eligible for registration with ApHC or ApHCC or any other affiliated registry that stays within the breeding parameters of Appaloosa to Appaloosa or accepted breeding outcrosses to Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, or Arabian horses. All horses meeting these breeding guidelines will be eligible for IPSHR registration as an Appaloosa horse. IPSHR recognizes some of these horses may display a high expression of facial and leg white markings, and that such horses may not be registered with ApHC or ApHCC. IPSHR does not regard such markings as a disqualifying fault for this category. However, large expressed patches of obvious paint or pinto patterning — continuous leg white above the elbows and gaskins, large areas of white on the belly or body — shall constitute disqualification for this category. See Pintaloosa. |

Appaloosa Blood Horse |
An Appaloosa Blood Horse shall be defined as any horse that is from appaloosa lineage, but is the product of breeding outside the allowed breed registries recognized by ApHC or ApHCC. Some typical examples would be warmblood, morgan, or standardbred crosses. Appaloosa Blood horses bred to another breed or another Appaloosa blood horse will remain eligible for registration within this category. Draft horses are excluded from this category, see Stonewall & Draft Blood Horse category. |

A Foundation horse shall be defined as a horse that is a decendant of Appaloosa breeding to Appaloosa breeding only. IPSHR supports the Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry classification of a foundation horse, which requires that a foundation horse prove at least 75% Appaloosa blood within a five generation pedigree. Any horse that qualifies under this standard shall be eligible for registration in this category for IPSHR purposes. |
|
Grade Horse |
A Grade horse shall be defined as any horse that has either one or both parents unknown. Any horse of unknown parentage that demonstrates a documented “appaloosa” coat pattern shall be eligible for registration in the GRADE category of IPSHR. Any horse of unknown parentage that demonstrates the acceptable characteristics of mottled skin, striped hooves, and white sclera shall be eligible for registration in the GRADE category of IPSHR. Mottled skin shall be that which is defined by the appaloosa registries of the United States and Canada. IPSHR encourages owners to provide all known information regarding parentage of GRADE horses and will document any known parents. Horses suspected of Draft lineage shall be excluded from this category. See Stonewall & Draft blood horse. |
|
Knabstrupper |
A Knabstrupper horse shall be defined as any horse registered with an established Knabstrupper registry as Pure-bred. All Knabstrupper horses are eligible for IPSHR registration. |
|
Knabstrupper Blood Horse |
A Knabstrupper Blood Horse horse shall be defined as any horse of knabstrupper lineage. A Knabstrupper Blood horse is produced by breeding a purebred Knabstrupper to another breed. Knabstrupper Blood horses bred to another breed or to another Knabstrupper Blood horse will remain eligible for registration. Draft horses are excluded from this category, see Stonewall & Draft Blood Horse Category. |

IPSHR Mule |
Since Mules are sterile hybrids, we do not register them for blood book registration. We do accept any Appaloosa patterned mules and Pinto mules, or a combination of the two. We record them in their own category for performance purposes. All IPSHR recorded patterned mules are eligible to participate in the STAR awards program. The USEF accepts mules as eligible participants in dressage and other sport events. IPSHR sees no reason to contest the USEF’s ruling that mules are considered acceptable equine sport athletes and welcomes sport mules into this category. |
|
Pintaloosa |
A Pintaloosa shall be defined as any horse which is the result of breeding a Pinto or Paint horse to an Appaloosa horse. The pintaloosa horse may exhibit only pinto or appaloosa markings, both types of markings, or no markings at all. IPSHR requires proof of appaloosa lineage if appaloosa coloring (Lp or PATN) is not visible. To maintain registration with IPSHR, Pintaloosa breeding horses must be bred to any Appaloosa or another Pintaloosa. |

A PONY shall be defined as any equine that is between 46″ and 58″ inclusive, falling between 11.2 and 14.2 hands at mature height. Ponys may be accepted with one or both parents of LP/Patn breeding or registered with the Ponies of the Americas Club. Any pony that displays a documented “appaloosa” coat shall be eligible for registration in the PONY category of IPSHR. In addition, any pony that demonstrates the acceptable characteristics of mottled skin, striped hooves, and white sclera shall be eligible for registration in the PONY category of IPSHR. Mottled skin shall be that which is defined by the appaloosa registries of the United States and Canada. |

Stonewall and Draft Blood Horse |
A Stonewall Horse shall be defined as any horse which qualifies under the registration criteria set aside by the Sugarbush - Stonewall combined registries. For more information on Stonewall bred horses, visit this link. A Draft Blood Horse shall be defined as any horse that is produced by the breeding of a draft horse to an appaloosa patterned horse. Any Grade Horse suspected of carrying draft blood lineage by display of draft characteristic conformation shall be eligible for this category. Draft Blood horses bred to an Appaloosa or another Draft Blood horse will remain eligible for registration in this category. |
